How To Use SMS to Email

Here is a basic primer on sending and receiving SMS messages:

  1. Inbound SMS messages to those DIDs will be delivered to their respective e-mail addresses above. Only that e-mail address will be allowed to send messages outbound.
  2. It is absolutely possible to have more than one e-mail address associated with a single DID (more than one employee?).
  3. When replying to e-mails from the Gateway, or originating a new outbound message, be sure to put ### after your message, so we do not include your e-mail signature, and the previous message that you are replying to.
  4. When originating a new outbound message (not a reply), you can use one of two methods:
    1. <10-digit telephone number>@sms.siptrunk.com
    2. <10-digit telephone number>–<10-digit DID to use>@sms.siptrunk.com

The difference between those two is only significant when one e-mail address is associated with multiple DIDs. Right now, using Method 1 will create messages that show the caller ID as the first SMS-enabled DID on your account. However, using Method 2, it is possible to specify another DID (if you choose to SMS-enable more than one DID) in the second part of the destination e-mail address, such that the "Caller ID" will show up as that DID.

If you are interested in an actual API to send and receive messages with, please let us know and we will begin the process to get you an API key and documentation. This would allow users to programmatically send outbound SMS messages as well as specify POST or GET web hooks to route inbound SMS messages to.
